THRIVE: Connecting ATSI* & CALD* LGBTI* Communities

(*Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander | *Culturally And Linguistically Diverse | *Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex)

This forum aims to increase the capacity of workers within the sector to engage ATSI and CALD LGBTI communities and will provide opportunities for participants to learn about & contribute to a range of different topics/discussions, including:
– hear ATSI and CALD LGBTI community members personal stories/inclusive practice strategies;
– gain knowledge about Hume region ATSI and CALD LGBTI communities and their needs – a local context;
– launch the Hume region advisory group, “THRIVE”, supporting ATSI and CALD LGBTI communities of all ages.


Ro Allen – Ro Allen has been appointed Victoria’s first Gender and Sexuality Commissioner, Minister for Equality Martin Foley announced early last year. The Commissioner champions the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse and intersex (LGBTI) Victorians within the Government. Ms Allen is an effective, experienced and longstanding advocate for LGBTI Victorians and has held leadership positions in the community and government sectors. Ms Allen has been a member of three Victorian Government LGBTI ministerial advisory groups and chaired the ministerial advisory committee on LGBTI Health and Wellbeing between 2007 and 2009. As founding CEO of UnitingCare Cutting Edge, Ms Allen established Victoria’s first rural support group for young LGBTI people, giving her a particular understanding of the issues faced in rural and regional areas. Ms Allen currently chairs the Adult, Community and Further Education Board and is a former Chair of the Victorian Skills Commission, the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVIC), and former member of the Hume Regional Development Australia Committee. Ms Allen has been recognised for her community service: in 2003 she received a Centenary Medal and in 2009 she was inducted into the Victorian Government Honour Roll for Women.

Peter Waples-Crowe – Peter Waples-Crowe is a Ngarigo fella. He is an artist and a current arts worker with Indigenous post-release prisoners for the Torch. He also has I long history of working in Indigenous health and wellbeing, and has always been a GLBTIQ advocate in the Aboriginal Community in Victoria and beyond. He is a cisgendered gay queer Koori.

Imam Nur Warsame – Nur Warsame is an Imam based in Melbourne. He obtained his religious qualifications in Egypt and memorized the Quran in South Africa. He has been active as an Imam in Australia since 2000. He is also the convener of Marhaba, a social support group that focuses on the welfare of LGBTIQ Muslims.

Kildonan UnitingCare’s Diversity Project is partnering with the Hume Region’s HACC Development Team under the Victorian State Government’s funding to support same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse young people as part of the Healthy Equal Youth (HEY) Project with a particular focus on Aboriginal and CALD LGBTI communities. HACC/CHSP has a focus on diversity in ageing. THIS IS A FREE EVENT.
